Workshop on next generation Internet protocol

The European telecommunications standards institute (ETSI), together with the European Commission's Enterprise DG, is organising an international workshop on the testing, certification and market acceptance of new applications for the next generation Internet protocol IP version 6 (IPv6) , to take place on 22 September in Brussels.

This 'plugtest' event is part of the eEurope standards Action Plan. The keynote address will be given by Fabio Colassanti, Director General of the Information Society DG.

The Internet's underlying protocol, IPv4, is now nearly 20 years old and needs upgrading, not least to remedy a shortage of IP addresses, which are needed by any new machine added to the net. IPv6 is expected gradually to replace IPv4, and during the transition, interoperability events are being held regularly, to test and showcase new applications.

OSCE - Amsterdam Recommendations on Freedom of the Media and the Internet
At the end of a two-day conference on Internet-related perils to freedom of expression, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Freimut Duve, has issued a call for the OSCE to take up a strong position towards free flow of information on the Internet. The so-called Amsterdam Recommendations on Freedom of the Media and the Internet were issued at the conclusion of the conference held on 13 and 14 June in the City Hall of Amsterdam. The event brought together more than 25 experts from international organizations, media, academia, specialized non-governmental organizations from Europe and the U.S. as well as from the European Parliament, Council of! Europe, European Commission and the OSCE.

Conference discusses developing interoperable e-solutions at local and regional level
  A conference on strengthening the relationship between local and regional eGovernment services and local business communities will take place on 17 July in Brussels.
The main aim of the event is to identify the latest developments in e-business and eGovernment occurring across Europe. Participants will be asked to define practical solutions to increasing cooperation and the exchange of ideas between government departments and business communities at local and regional levels.
The event is being organised by e-MINDER, an Information Society Technologies (IST)  project, funded under the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) .

e-2003 eChallenges

This is the thirteenth in a series of Annual conferences, which regularly attract over 500 delegates from commercial, government and research organisations. Focusing on e-business, e-government, Organisational Knowledge, e-work and Knowledge Work and eEurope 2005, the goal of e-2003 is to stimulate rapid take-up of Research and Technology Development (RTD) results by European industry. The programme will combine case studies, demonstrations, technical, legal and policy papers. It provides an excellent networking environment to discuss problems and new ideas, share knowledge and experience and obtain feedback from potential partners and users.

Good targets for e-business policies - workshop
  The Greek Presidency, in cooperation with the European Commission's Enterprise DG, is organising a workshop to identify good targets for e-business policies in Heraklion, Crete, from 26 to 27 May.
The event is organised within the framework of the eEurope 2005 action plan, and aims to discuss how e-business policies should be designed as well as to identify voluntary targets at regional and national level.
Practical examples of second generation e-business policies, with an emphasis on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) , are the subject of an open call for presentations. The deadline for submissions is 31 March, and the selected presentations will form the basis for discussions at the event.
The workshop is expected to bring together around 150 decision makers and e-business policy practitioners, academics, business association representatives and SME network members.
The workshop is only open to members of the European e-Business Support Network for SMEs, therefore anyone wishing to present a policy initiative is advised to register for membership beforehand.

Conference to discuss socio-economic impact of Internet services in Europe
  A conference on the socio-economic impact of Internet services in Europe will take place on 25 and 26 September in Bucharest, Romania.
The event, entitled E-COMM-LINE 2003, aims to foster discussions on the latest viable, practical and scientific developments of electronic services in Europe.
It is hoped that the conference will contribute to the improvement of the economic and business environment and to the Commission's eEurope and eEurope plus action plans.
Organised by the research and development institute (IPA)  and the academy of economic studies in Bucharest the conference will bring together representatives from European governments, industry, research centres and firms involved in ebusiness.
The conference is co sponsored by the European Commission, the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research and the chamber of commerce.

eHealth 2003 Conference: ICT for health
  The European Commission, in collaboration with the Greek Presidency of the EU, is organising a high-level conference on e-health, to take place on 22 and 23 May in Brussels.
The event is aimed at European health ministers and senior representatives of stakeholder groups such as professional and user organisations. 33 leading e-healthcare applications have also been selected for exhibition at the conference, based on a call for proposals.
The best demonstrations at the conference will receive the first eEurope Awards in e-health.
The two key objectives of the conference are to reinforce the implementation and deployment of e-health systems in Europe and to provide health ministers and the public sector with information on which key e-health implementation decisions may be made.
Activities at the event will look at three themes: implementation, user perspectives, and measuring added value.
Presentations and a state of the art report to be published at the event will focus on implementation strategies with a view to future programmes in Europe. e-Health perspectives will be presented by four different users: the patient, the healthcare professional, the hospital manager and the public health authority. Specific reports will provide guidance on measuring the added value of e-health according to three criteria: economic benefits, benefits in access to care, and benefits in terms of quality care.

International workshop on mobile multimedia communications
  The Centre for digital technology and management is to host the eighth international workshop on mobile multimedia communications (MoMuc 2003)  from 6 to 8 October in Munich, Germany.
MoMuc 2003 aims to stimulate knowledge exchanges in the emerging and strategically important field of mobile multimedia communications.
Specifically, the objectives of the workshop are:
- to integrate technological and business views on wireless technologies in order to realise an interdisciplinary approach for future research;
- to bring together researchers, practitioners and potential users involved in and affected by wireless technologies;
- to provide a timely forum for exploratory research contributions.
The workshop is aimed at both technical and business experts and researchers in the field of multimedia systems and mobility issues.

Prague hosts European ICT investment forum
  The ninth European information communication technologies (ICT) investment forum will take place from 14 to15 April in Prague, Czech Republic.
Top corporate executives, leading venture capitalists and delegates from fast growing companies and advisory bodies will be present to give an overview of the current trends in the following sectors and markets: information technology security systems and solutions; multimedia and broadband; technology mobile access solutions
Potential participants will have an opportunity during the forum to seek new funds, new partners, international development or simply improve their network of contacts.
